External Drive Not Mounting Mac Os X 10

I recently bought a 500GB external hard drive (FAT32 format). When I plugged it into my macbookpro (OS X), it wouldn't mount. I reformatted the hard drive using my PC to NTFS, and the mac could only read it, but not write onto it. I looked online and installed a software, NTFS_1.0d2.dmg, onto my mac. However, after that, my mac wouldn't even mount my NTFS drive. I then uninstalled the program, and now when I plug my hard drive in, an error message comes up saying that the disk is unreadable. I tried installing macfuse and NTFS-3G programs, but when I tried following the installation instructions, I ran into problems, and basically, right now, my mac won't recognize my hard drive. I would like to be able to get my mac to at least mount the NTFS drive, and if possible, to be able to both read and write to it. Please help me!! Thanks.
